E.ON and OVO takeover: what it means for you

E.ON’s purchase of OVO has been cleared by the competition regulator. If you’re an OVO customer, here’s what changes, and what doesn’t.

What’s happening

E.ON has agreed to buy OVO, and the deal received competition clearance in early October 2026. Reports put E.ON’s household customers at around 5.6 million and OVO’s at around 4 million, which would make the combined business one of Britain’s largest suppliers. Completion is expected later, with Which? suggesting by the end of the year.

If you’re with OVO

  • Nothing changes until the deal completes: same account, payments and contact details.
  • Your tariff, including any fix, is honoured until its end date.
  • Your supply won’t be interrupted.
  • You can still switch away if you find a better deal (check exit fees on fixes).
  • Take a meter reading and a screenshot of your balance, so you have a record of any credit or debt.

Should you switch now?

Only if there’s a better deal for you. Compare tariffs as usual using our deal checklist and see all UK suppliers.
